Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are currently juggling in and out of the Fairfax, Virginia Courthouse. It so happened that the Pirates of the Caribbean star has filed a lawsuit against his ex-wife. Owing to the same, the former Hollywood couple’s private life has become public now. For the unversed, the defamation trial began on April 11, 2022, and continues till now. The said trial is heavily covered by commentators on social media and the press. This follows another libel trial that happened in the UK in 2020 against the publisher and the executive editor of The Sun which covered the same issues.

Johnny Depp has sued Heard for $50 million. It is concerning a Washington Post op-ed written by the Aquaman actress in December 2018 about being a survivor of sexual abuse. Heard wrote that she had been the victim of sexual abuse like many other women when she was of college-age. She further added that she remained quiet as she did not expect filing complaints could bring justice to her. She also said that she did not see herself as a victim.

When Amber Heard filed for divorce in 2016 against Depp, she also filed a restraining order for domestic violence. The actress accused him of volatile and violent behavior perpetrated under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Depp and Heard met for the first time on the sets of the movie The Rum Diaries. It is based on a novel penned by Hunter S. Thompson. While Depp played the role of a journalist, Heard played the role of an engaged woman who Depp falls for in the movie.

For the unversed, Johnny Depp was already married to Vanessa Paradis. Moreover, Amber Heard was also in a relationship with photographer Tasya Van Ree.

Depp later revealed during a witness trial about having felt an instant connection with Heard when he kissed her during a shower scene.

2012

Johnny Depp parted ways with Vanessa Paradis with whom he shares two children, John Cheistopher and Lily-Rose. It is the same year when he began dating Amber Heard.

2014

After dating for some time, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard got engaged in 2014. The duo was also spotted attending the Met Gala together in the same year. Amber Heard was also photographed wearing an engagement ring. In fact, Depp confirmed their engagement by flaunting his own diamond ring!

2015

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard got married in a private marriage ceremony that took place on his private island in the Bahamas in February 2015. According to Depp’s testimony, the marriage had 20 to 25 attendees.

2016

Amber Heard filed for divorce just 15 months after her marriage to Johnny Depp. She also got a temporary restraining order against the actor while claiming that he abused her under the influence of alcohol and drugs. However, Johnny Depp denied the accusations and the couple reached a $7 million settlement out of the court in the same year. The actress pledged to donate the money to charity. Their divorce was finalized a year later in 2017.

2018

Johnny Depp sued the popular British tabloid The Sun in June 2018 for an alleged libel over a headline that it published against him. He sued the tabloid for £200,000 and additional legal fees.

2018

Amber Heard penned an op-ed in The Washington Post in which she mentioned the instances of domestic abuse in her life. Although Depp was not mentioned in the post, he believes the op-ed was about him.

2019

Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard for defamation concerning the op-ed published in The Washington Post. The same suit also denies that the actor abused Heard and claims that the article was meant to gain positive publicity for the actress. However, her legal team said that the suit was filed to silence the actress.

2020

In July 2020, a three-week trial began against the executive editor and publisher of The Sun. In the same trial, Heard alleged that Depp had been violent toward her on at least 14 occasions. However, the actor denied any kind of abusive behavior against her.

Later, a High court judge came to the conclusion that the allegations against Depp were substantially true. Following the trial, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor took to Instagram and called the judgment surreal. He later appealed for the same in 2021.

Depp not only lost the trial suit but also his role as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise in the same year. If reports are to be believed, Warner Bros requested Depp to resign from his role in the popular movie.

2021

Johnny Depp and his legal team once again appealed against the 2020 ruling that he had abused Amber Heard. They also brought in fresh evidence regarding Heard’s alleged donations claiming she did not make the said payments after the divorce settlement. However, he was denied permission to appeal the earlier ruling.

2022

Finally, the defamation trial of Johnny Depp against Amber Heard began in Fairfax, Virginia. The trial is reportedly lasting for around six weeks. Amber heard shared an Instagram post ahead of the trial in which she spoke to the fans about the case.
