Researchers belonging to the Penn State College of Medicine did an analysis on similar lines. They studied 1,344 adults. The average age was taken as 49 years. All of them were asked to sleep in the laboratory for a night. The results were rather shocking. It shows that 39 percent of people had at least three risk factors. These factors are clustered together with and are known as metabolic syndrome. The cluster of danger signs was
- Body Mass (BMI) higher than 30
- Elevated total cholesterol
- Blood pressure
- Fasting blood sugar
- Triglyceride levels
So, the people with metabolic syndrome who slept less than 6 hours in the lab were 2.1 times more likely to die of stroke or heart disease. This is as compared to those who did not have either of the risk factors. These findings were also published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
The lead researcher, Julio Fernandez Mendoza commented on the same. He said, “If you have several heart disease risk factors, taking care of your sleep and consulting with a clinician if you have insufficient sleep is important if you want to lower your risk of death from heart disease or stroke.”
