Virat Kohli not playing risk-averse cricket is a concern: Aakash Chopra

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra said Virat Kohli is no longer playing the risk-averse cricket that he was known for earlier and his strategy in the recent past is a reason for worry for India. Chopra expressed that Kohli’s discipline earned him one of the best batters to have ever played the game but it has been lacking in his game.

Remarks on runs scored by Virat Kohli

His remarks came after Virat Kohli departure after scoring 17 runs from 13 balls in the first T20 of a 3-match series against the West Indies. The match was at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata earlier on Wednesday. Kohli got out while trying to hit Fabian Allen, into the stands. Even so, the former captain got caught at long-off. It was a continuance of a series of low scores, with him having already survived a poor ODI series against the same competitors. He only managed to achieve a score of 8, 18 and 0 in the other ODI’s before this 17 in the first T20I. Besides, India won all the matches.

It is the second-lowest he has ever achieved in a three-match bilateral ODI series. And the first since the home series against Pakistan in 2012/13. He scored only 13 runs in three innings averaging 4.33. Yet, the way in which the right-hander is preparing his innings isn’t synonymous with the manner Kohli used to play in the past.

Kohli is maybe dissatisfied with his dismissal as the lead batter. It had started well and seemed that it will anchor the pursuit of 158 following Rohit Sharma’s exit. Kohli’s wicket provided West Indies with a chance to get back into the game. Actually, India lost 3 wickets in the middle before Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav pushed the team to a 1-0 lead. Kohli was not satisfied even when he was at the dugout. Maybe, he imagined playing a different shot for the delivery that he got out.

What did Aakash Chopra say about him?

Aakash Chopra in his YouTube show said, “Virat Kohli never used to do like this earlier. If a six is not required, he never used to hit it and scored through singles or fours. He was risk-averse, and he will not play the risky shots at all. That is what Virat was all about but now he is not playing like that and that is a bit of a concern”.

He further added, “A good player’s sign is that his name gets written with prominence in any report card. It is his story even on the day when he fails because 40 for Kohli is a failure, 40 for Aakash is a success.” Aakash Chopra emphasised that Virat Kohli might be straining at a fact. The fact that he is no longer the epicentre of attention in the Indian batting lineup.

At the same venue on February 18, the second and penultimate T20I between India and West Indies will take place. The Rohit-led team will be keen to take an ironclad lead against the Kieron Pollard-led West Indies. However, Kohli will be desperate to achieve a big score in the upcoming match.
